Friday Night Fab Five: Ghosts of Artistic Past

I'm not kidding when I say that I love to create things and will try every art form in the book. Shortly after I graduated high school, I decided that I just HAD to be a painter even though I can't draw and have no painting skills whatsoever (other than a wall or two or course). This was during my 90's flannel & Doc Martens conforming non-conformist phase....I miss Grunge. *sigh* Anyhoo, thus began my foray into the world of painting on canvas.

I only bring this up now because while I was getting out the Christmas decorations from our scary (to my husband) basement, I discovered some of these old canvases and boy are they a hoot. So I thought I'd share them here in the interest of sharing some of my projects that I do not consider to be all that great. lol I had a lot of fun painting these and while I have discovered that painting is not my forte, the fun of creating is trying a little of everything to find what you're really good at, at least for me anyway. lol I still love love love working on canvas, I just now find myself gluing things to it rather than painting a masterpiece, I'll leave that to the experts! lol

Enjoy! (Or run away in horror, it's all good! :P)

(Oh also, there's more than five so this is more like a Friday Night Fab Seven :D)

So this is my first painting ever. Once I discovered that I couldn't draw or paint worth a lick, I decided to paint the only thing I was really into: music. So I would light candles and incense, drink wine, smoke cigarettes and play the same song over and over while I "painted the song" so to speak. This was "Nobody's Home" by Pink Floyd (the Symphonic Floyd version). Wasn't I the sweetest little ole tortured soul you ever did see? lol

This one is "Down In It" by Nine Inch Nails

"Talk Show Host" by Radiohead

This was isn't a song. At least I don't think so, there's nothing written on the back. :)

At one point I decided that I was going to do something recognizable if it killed me so I started doing profiles/silhouettes. This one is a man and a woman, see em? lol My mom swiped this one when she was down for Thanksgiving last week.

Now comes what my mom calls my "Aliens". lol I just wanted to do something more than splatter painting so here it is. lol Check out her giant rack. Her back must really hurt after a long day, know what I mean?

I couldn't draw hands (or much of anything as you can see) so I just traced my hands on the canvas. lol I did a few of these gals actually, I might post more here at some point.

Thanks for hanging with me for this blast from the past. Sorry it's not that Fab or Five. lol I'd love to hear about things you used to create when you were younger that you don't do anymore! Am I the only one with artsy skeletons in the closest? lol

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. Maggi, soo fun to see another side of you!

  2. I think anything creative is fab, so be proud sister!

  3. I like the Down In It one!

I think creativity is important to try even if you aren't particularly good at it - it can still open up our perspectives.

And yes I saw the man and woman in the silhouettes! *pats self on head*

Occasionally I find a piece of jewelry I made when I first started and I go "HOLY COW" and cut and snip and de-string until it no longer exists and then I can make something new out of it. :)

  4. I think it's great that you tried your hand at painting...I do believe that with practice, you can get good at anything...

I used to make craft projects for others as a teenager...something I had totally forgotten about till I chanced upon some photos which had me posing with my

  5. I love your paintings!! The organic-ness of them is awesome! I'll have to share some of mine with you.

  11. Very cool girly!! I used to draw A LOT up until I was about 22 (When life got a hold of me) I did portraits, comics, you name it.

Never painted. I was always too worried I wouldn't be able to control my creations like I could with a pencil. Weird huh?

  12. My Doc Martens were purple velvet - what color were yours? Gosh, I wish I still had those....
And I really like the first painting and the profile one. Those are cool! Like your blog, too, btw. :)

  13. That is so hilarious. Good on you for getting in touch with your inner tortured artist! Love the whole wine, cigs and candles thing.

    Have a great weekend,

  14. How awesome is this girlie....Look at all of that talent...I LOVE THEM!!!

Have a great weekend and thanks for another Fabulous Friday POST!!!

  15. I'm actually loving the Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead ones :D

I used to draw. And draw. And draw :D I only have a few of them that I kept and now the girls look through my folder. My sister is one of those that can reproduce almost photographic sketches of almost anything and (wrongly) I always used to compare myself to her. I don't anymore - we are different people with different styles.

  16. What an artistic soul you are- I actually think that someone might put some of the darker ones over the couch in a cool angst filled apt! I am never happy with anything I paint either-But that profile one is really cool!

  21. Maggi! Love to see this piece of your past. I miss Doc Martens. I had a pair of the Mary Janes and tried to find the cutest socks to wear underneath them. Thanks for the sweet comments on the grinch post honey. Hope you are having a great weekend! Kori xoxo

  22. Maggi, I am with you on the try anything at least once. I tried the painting thing as well and well I wasn't exactly an artist! I love the one of the man and the woman! I bet you mom has a great place for that one!
