2012 Sketchbook Project Limited Edition

Hi everyone!

Well, believe it or not, I actually completed (and mailed!) my sketchbook for the 2012 Sketchbook Project Limited Edition. I had big plans for this thing. I was going to do this whole Jane Austen-esque theme but I got derailed by other projects and my poor little book sat by neglected.

Cut to early April when Ty died and in the aftermath of that I realized that my sketchbook wasn't close to being finished and the deadline was approaching. My first thought was, "Nuts to that, my brother just died, I'm not making anything!" Then it occurred to me that by changing my theme and making my sketchbook about my brother, he could be a part of the Brooklyn Art Library forever. So I got down to work.

Actually, I got my due dates mixed up and thought I had less time so I did the whole book in one day. Then I discovered that the due date was April 30th and I had an extra week I've could've worked on it. *face palm* So I must admit that this is not my best work but Ty will be a part of a world tour and have a home in the art library so I'm proud of myself for that. :)

I've already signed up for next year's Sketchbook Project so I may be bringing the Austen in that one. :D

A special thanks to all of you for your thoughts, prayers, e-mails and cards during the difficult time, they were such a blessing to me and my family!

  6. This is a beautiful beautiful book Maggi and a lasting memorial to Ty. You say it isn't your best work because it was done quickly, but I bet it was done with passion, emotion and lots of love which is far more important that how many hours something has taken to produce. The fact that one of these spreads will be selected for publication will ensure that Ty's memory lives on.

I'm so glad you managed to complete this wonderful little sketchbook.

  8. Dear Maggi, you are very brave and very smart. I am sure doing these pages was hard, but also perhaps soothing and what you needed the most right at that moment? If you had not told us you had done this project rather quickly (and did not think it was your best work) I would have never thought that, not ever. Your pages are interesting, colorful, textured, and so heavy with emotion they catch my breath. That equals superb artwork in my opinion, which is often done quickly with too much fuss. I love the grungy-ness of the pages, the different photos of your brother and the text you used that seems so apropos. Is it from a book or did you type it up yourself? I really, really, really like what you did here and the fact that you did not hide.Instead you faced your loss head on and dealt with it or at least began to, through your art. That is one smart way to start healing after such a loss. One of these spreads will be published in the art house co-op book for this project -you were smart to encourage yourself to finish. Right On! I have also registered for the 2013 sketchbook project : )) so we will see each other there too. Love, lenna

  12. It's a gorgeous, textural, emotion filled book. It's only your opinion that it's not your best work... I personally think it's one of my favourite pieces of yours.
